Freshwater

"Fresh" water environments that do not contain much salt.

Rivers and Streams

Natural bodies of moving water that empty into seas, oceans or lakes.

Lakes and Ponds

Inland bodies of standing water. Usually freshwater but can be saline. In general, lakes are better than ponds.

Wetlands

Lowland areas that are saturated with water. Includes marshes, swamps and bogs.

Temporary Pools

Small bodies of standing water that periodically dry up and then refill with water when it next rains.

Brackish

Picture
Areas where freshwater meets saline water, usually when a river flows into the ocean and tidal influences change the salinity of the water. Includes places like estuaries.
